What is the VGDS?
The VGDS is a public dental initiative that enables eligible patients to receive dental treatment from private providers when public dental clinics have extended wait times. When referred, patients are issued a VGDS voucher -typically valued up to $939 -which can be used at Mickleham Dental for a wide range of treatments at public clinic rates.
Each voucher is valid for three months and includes a co-payment of $31.50 per visit, capped at $126 for a full course of care.
What Does the VGDS Cover?
VGDS vouchers help cover the cost of many preventive and restorative services, such as:
- Dental check-ups and cleans
- Fillings
- Tooth extractions
- Root canal treatment
- Emergency dental care
Please note that some procedures may not be covered under the scheme. If a treatment falls outside of the VGDS scope, patients may choose to proceed privately at their own cost. Our team will always provide clear guidance and options before treatment begins.

Who is eligible for a VGDS voucher? Vouchers are issued through Victoria’s public dental system — typically to Health Care Card and Pensioner Concession Card holders and their dependants — when your local community dental clinic can’t provide treatment within a reasonable time. Eligibility and issuing are managed by the community dental clinics, not by private practices: we can’t issue vouchers ourselves, but we do accept them.
How much is the voucher worth? Vouchers are typically valued at up to around $939 of treatment, provided at public clinic rates. A co-payment of $31.50 applies per visit, capped at $126 for a full course of care. Values and co-payments are set by the Victorian Government and are adjusted periodically, so check your voucher paperwork for the exact figures that apply to you.
How long is my voucher valid? General care vouchers are valid for three months from the date of issue. If your voucher is close to expiring, contact us promptly — treatment must commence within the validity period.
What treatments does it cover? The scheme covers general preventative and restorative care — examinations, cleans, fillings, extractions and similar treatment. Some procedures fall outside the scheme; where that’s the case, we’ll tell you clearly before any treatment starts, and you can choose to proceed privately or return to your community clinic.
How do I use my voucher at Mickleham Dental? Call us on 1300 276 000 or book online, mention that you hold a VGDS voucher, and bring the original voucher to your appointment. We’ll confirm what your voucher covers before treatment begins — no surprises. We also accept Victorian Emergency Dental Scheme (VEDS) vouchers for urgent care.
You may be eligible for the Victorian General Dental Scheme if you:
- Are 18 years or older and hold a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, or are a dependent of a cardholder
- Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- Are a Refugee or Asylum Seeker
