What to expect during your first appointment at Mickleham Dental

Mickleham Dental welcomes new patients to our practice on a daily basis. We pride ourselves on delivering the best care possible, whilst making you as comfortable as possible during your appointment.

During your first appointment at Mickleham Dental, your highly trained Dentist will sit with you and learn about your past and present oral health as well as your overall general health.

This is a time for you to get to know your treating dentist and is a great time to discuss any concerns you may have, whether it be a problem with your smile, or if you have anxiety about your dental visit. We understand for many people, there is a fear of visiting the dentist, which can stem from a bad past experience or just the idea of visiting the dentist alone. We strive to take any concerns you may have on board and aim to make your experience at Mickleham Dental as comfortable and relaxing as possible.

DURING YOUR EXAMINATION

01

Full Dental Examination

During any new patient appointment or routine 6 monthly check-ups, your dentist will complete a full mouth dental examination. This is where your dentist will:

Check your teeth, check your gums, and check your entire mouth

Your dentist will complete a thorough exam of your teeth, to check for any signs of decay or broken teeth, and check to see if there is any plaque or tartar present on your teeth.

After assessing your teeth, your dentist will check your gums, by measuring the area between your teeth and gums. This is often a very good indication of your overall gum health and can indicate if there are any signs of early gum disease forming.

Finally, your dentist will do an overall assessment of your tongue, throat, jaw, cheeks, face, and neck to check for signs of discomfort or swelling and look for any signs of oral cancer.

Once the assessment has been completed, your dentist will recommend a series of dental x-rays, which allows them to check for decay and other issues, not able to be detected during a visual examination. Once the x-rays have been taken, your dentist will assess them, and then create a personalized treatment plan, suited to your needs. The treatment plan will vary depending on what/if anything is found during your dental examination.

02

Scale and Clean

During any new patient appointment or routine 6 monthly check-ups, your dentist will complete a full mouth dental scale and clean. This is where your dentist will:

Scale and clean your teeth and provide fluoride treatment

Your dentist will painlessly remove any built-up plaque or tartar that has accumulated on your teeth, using a specialized instrument known as an ultrasonic scaler, combined with high-quality hand instruments to keep your teeth and gums in the best shape possible!

After removing any build-up on your teeth, your dentist will polish to remove any stains that may be present, leaving your teeth sparkling and clean!

Your dentist may then recommend finishing with a professional fluoride treatment, which strengthens the enamel on your teeth and helps to prevent decay.

After the clean is complete, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions regarding any further treatment you may require.

It’s then you will be recommended to continue with regular dental check-ups as they are crucial for maintaining optimal oral health.
