What Are White Spot Lesions and Hypo Spots?

White spot lesions are early signs of enamel demineralisation. Commonly appearing after orthodontic treatment, these chalky white patches result from an imbalance between enamel breakdown and natural repair. Poor oral hygiene, plaque build-up, and acid exposure can contribute to their formation.

Hypo spots, on the other hand, are congenital enamel defects often caused by trauma, illness, or disruption during tooth development. These areas may appear as white or discoloured patches that don’t respond well to traditional whitening.

How ICON Works

ICON uses a specially formulated, ultra-thin resin to penetrate and fill the porous enamel in the affected area. This resin has optical properties similar to natural enamel, helping the white spot blend in with the surrounding tooth surface.

Key steps include:

  • Cleaning the tooth surface with pumice
  • Gently etching to remove the surface layer and open up the pores
  • Applying a drying agent to prepare the area
  • Infiltrating the lesion with ICON resin
  • Light-curing and polishing for a smooth, natural finish

The entire process takes around 45 minutes to an hour, and most patients experience no discomfort. No injections or drilling are required
